Big Car is a non-profit 501c3 arts organization with a gallery and performance venue in the Fountain Square neighborhood of Indianapolis, Indiana. In our space in the Murphy Art Center, we host live music, spoken word events, and a new art show each month. We prefer work -- be it visual, words or music -- that is doing something new, that is taking a chance, that bends reality into something that wasn't there before. We like experiments. We like darkness. We like work with an edge. We like humor. We like to have fun doing something new.
Big Car consistently surprises me with the high quality of the contemporary work they show. The environment is hip and the live music they feature on first Fridays is the best original music I've heard anywhere in town.
The special events and attention to under recognized artists from Indianapolis and beyond are the reasons why I think they are the best. Good art, unpretentious environment, and dedication to nurturing talented artists are why I think Big Car Gallery is the best.
Big Car is a refreshing addition to the art scene in Indianapolis. Not at all stuffy....anyone will feel right at home. It's approach to genre does not allow it to be caught in a rut. Art + music + people=perfect combination.
They give people a chance to express their talents and be recognized. For an inspiring artist, writer, or musician we need more places like this in the world. Plus the people that run are awesome!
They offer a unique and truly eclectic experience. Everything ranging from paintings to collage, to spoken/written word, to music (Harry and the Potters vs. Draco and the Malfoys) and light.
Big car encourages local artists to create in a part of town that is not traditionally known for the arts. Both experimental filmmakers and musicians are also encouraged to perform there which helps those who have not been exposed to the arts move forward with the visions that they put away years ago. Big car is a big part of the movement that will one day make this town Indiana-someplace! Big car is one of the reasons I have not left for a larger town with a more established art community.
