What a museum! This little-known museum is probably the most authentic and beautiful museum I have ever toured. Truly it is an honor to tour such a well-intact 19th century structure, as the tours are often very intimate and casual enough to really absorb the information and history. I'd recommend it to anyone!

Truly unique among museums in this country. Beautiful 1895 brick building houses an important aspect of Indianapolis history. These early advances in health and life sciences have had an impact on all of our lives. Tours are presented in a way that is informative and entertaining for the general visitor and medical professionals as well.

The Medical History Museum is sooo interesting. The fact that IU used to train their medical doctors at the Pathology Building of the old State Mental Institution is awesome. There is so much information packed into a the museum and the staff, docents, interns, and volunteers do a great job!

It is interesting and different. It also has an herb garden. I really enjoyed the tour. It is also in a part of town this is not often visited, among the old baseball field. I suggest going to the museum and then going to one of the yummy Mexican restaurants nearby.

Never have I seen such an intact of example (interior and exterior) of an 1895 building, especially one as interesting as a pathology laboratory studying mental illness.

I'd put 6 stars if that were possible! What a shame that the majority is missing out on the IMHM experience! Truly one-of-a-kind!

Terrific, in-depth examination of medicine in the 19th and 20th century. You can learn for retention more in five minutes there than from reading a book on the same subject. An unsung treasure!

It is a HUGE part of Indianapolis' history as one of the forerunners of medical technology. Not many people know about it and not many medical companies/hospitals/laboratories give much credit to this place that had a large part in the start of medical careers here in Indianapolis, Indiana!

It has focused on educational projects for the entire community including elementary, middle, and high school students, college and medical professional students, and the general public. Located in the Haughville neighborhood, it has materials in Spanish as well as in English. The building preserves a unique place in American history---the first building in the United States to have complete laboratory facilities for studying psychiatric illnesses. That tradition has continued in Indianapolis since Central Indiana Hospital functions were moved to Larue Carter Hospital and the opening in midtwentieth century of the Institute of Psychiatric Research at the Indiana University School of Medicine. The latter continues the tradition of cutting edge science. In addition to the original building, there is a physician's office from the 1950s and a medicinal garden showing native plants used for medicines by early pioneers and native Americans. This is a well-rounded museum available to all, including those who visit from other states.

No matter how often I visit the Museum, I learn something new. There is fascinating history in every corner of every room. The setting, itself, tells a unique story of Central State Hospital as well - from its beginning to its closing. A great deal of important work was done right there at the museum to improve care and treatment of those with mental disorders. The museum is fascinating, and a very important part of history...and the staff has been so very helpful and wonderfully instructive to myself and my students over many years of time!

Coming to this museum is like taking a step back in time. The staff know many interesting stories about what happened at both the Pathology Building and at Central State Hospital, so you get sucked into the history of an important part of Indiana history, the beginnings of the study of Life Sciences.

This place is gloriously authentic, providing a way to step back in time to a place over one hundred years ago and learn about the development of the practice of medicine in Indiana. There is no place else like it in the world!
