St. Elmo Steak House has been a landmark in downtown Indianapolis since 1902. It is the oldest Indianapolis steakhouse in its original location, and has earned a national reputation for its excellent steaks, seafood, chops and professional service.
Founded by Joe Stahr, the restaurant was named after the patron saint of sailors, St. Elmo. Starting out with a beautiful tiger-oak back-bar purchased in Chicago, the restaurant was simply a small tavern with a basic menu. Through the years, its classic turn-of-the-century Chicago saloon decor has changed very little, beyond the inevitable expansions.
From 1947 to 1986, the colorful odd-couple team of Harry Roth and Isadore Rosen skillfully guided St. Elmo to continued success before turning over the reins to veteran restaurateur Stephen Huse, the present owner. In 1997, Steve partnered with his son, Craig, who is the current operator.

This is the perfect place for tourists, locals know that there are several options that are better that this place. Food is average at best and the wait staff is quite rude at times. I took some out of town guests there recently and I just don't understand why this place gets so much hype. If you want over hyped shrimp then this is the place for you. If you want something better than try Peterson's or Ruth's Chris where the service and food are much better.

After hearing all the hype about how good it is or was, I was not that all impressed.
My steak as well as my wife's were both tough. Server was a bit rude and the price for eating in this establishment were to high. As for the shrimp cocktail, it is hot and that is about all I can say. I don't plan on visiting again. I will go to the South side on Meridian to get a really wonderful steak.

I agree with zeusdog, the place is overrated. When we ate at St. Elmo's our steaks were supposed to be filet mignon's, but they were tough and fatty. I would rather go to Ruth's Chris or Mo's.

AAAAA steaks. Excellent service!

The steaks you can cut with your fork, to chew them is like eating pudding. Food is hands down the best; however, it is extremely snooty! The close seating makes the noses in the air a bit uncomfortable. We moved to the bar to eat our meal. We prefer some of the other fine dining, steakhouses that have a less intense atmosphere.

What can you say? If you want the best steak in town and the best atmosphere to have it you can only go to St. Elmo's. Other places have to resort to expensive decor and destroying your steak with inappropriate seasoning or just butter. Put the best steak in town in your mouth right here.

I just don't understand the appeal of this place. Granted, what they have done in amidst all the high end steak chains is great. Other than that, I believe this is one of the most overrated places in the Indy dining landscape. Everyone touts the "famous" shrimp cocktail. You do realize it's just an un-godly amount of horseradish? Also, unless you are in New York or maybe LA, when is it en vogue to have rude service and be renowned/rewarded for it? It's almost like the local magazines, newspapers, etc are afraid to say or write anything bad about this institution - which I grant them it is an institution, but an overrated one at that. You can definetely find a better steak at one of the other steakhouses.
